I'M BIKING 300 MILES FOR NO KID HUNGRY WITH HALLIE on team 2GIRLS2CONES
What is it for: More than 13 million children live in "food insecure" homes in the United States, most of which are students in our public school system. The hunger that comes along with food insecuity makes academic success more difficult to achieve. Share our Strength is a national organization working to end childhood hunger in the United States. Their No Kid Hungry campaign is responsible for successfully implementing school meals programs in public schools across the country. Hallie and I have both worked with No Kid Hungry in different capacities, both administrative and programatic teaching cooking-on-a-budget classes to school communities.
Why does it matter: Hallie and I are riding because as educators in public schools, we see the value of free, regular, and healthy meals add to students' lives. I am a Spanish teacher in the Congress Heights neighborhood of Southeast Washington, DC, and I see firsthand every day how important breakfast before the bell and supper after school are to the learning and homework my kids do every day. Every $1 you donate can help connect a child with up to 10 meals through funding school food programs.
What else can you do: Donate to our Chef's Cycle team! We're shooting for $15,000 to support the education of our students. You can also share resources with local school leadershipsing on how to get connected with school meal programs. Check out this video to learn more about why it is so important to get kids 3 healthy meals every day in school: https://www.nokidhungry.org/who-we-are/hunger-facts.
